If you have been to Cebu City in the Philippines, you would have probably heard of the famous night market in Colon. It's always been one of the highlights as the Christmas season starts. People from all over the city rush to the busy streets of Colon to join in the festivity and place their best haggling skills into practice.

Finally, after a year of hiatus due to the pandemic, the Colon Night Market is now back.
Come and take a look at the latest happenings at the night market, and let's take a tour of the oldest street in the Philippines — Colon.

There are a lot of cheap items you can find in the night market. From dresses, clothes, sandals, and much more. Prices usually start at 50 pesos and above, and if you have mastered the haggling skills, you can be sure to make a good deal in the market.

Aside from the cheap finds, the Colon Night Market is also filled with a lot of food choices. You can find a lot of BBQ stations, pika-pika, siomai, food stalls, potato skewers, and a variety of fresh fruit drinks.

My favorite find was the fresh dragon fruit shake, which I bought for only $7.68 ($1.18). There was a long queue at the fruit shake stand, but it was worth the wait. The dragon fruit tastes so sweet and will really quench your thirst from the tiresome walking around the market.

I was also fond of the potato skewers and was just amazed at how satisfying the process of making them looked. The vendor will take one piece of potato that he manually twirl using a makeshift equipment to turn it into that long twirly skewer.

The market starts from 6 p.m. until midnight and is open every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The place is filled with a lot of people from all walks of life, so better prepare yourself for a bumpy, crowded, and sweaty experience, but trust me, it will be worth your while. You will enjoy the busy market night and be sure to go home with a full stomach and some good finds that won't break your pocket.

Some tips that might come handy if you want to visit the night market.

  • Wear Comfortable Shoes
You will be doing a whole lot of walking, so come prepared.
  • Don't wear flashy jewelry and secure your belongings.
Although the area is well secured and a police force is easily seen in the vicinity, it's best to take preventive measures against pickpockets as the market can get way too crowded.
  • If you want to dine in the BBQ stands, you'd better find and secure a table first before ordering.
It was a lesson learned for us on our visit. We already had our food ready, but with nowhere to sit.

This is my first time posting on #MarketFriday by @dswigle, it was fun writing this blog and be able to share our market experience with you all.
