Exploring Busay Falls x Tonggo Hills, San Fernando Cebu
Recently, I had the opportunity to join my friends on a scouting expedition in preparation for an upcoming hike for a cause series with Day Hike Therapist. We were looking for potential trails that can be added to the already existing ones that DHT offers and our destination? The picturesque Tonggo Hills and the refreshing Busay Falls that is located in San Fernando, Cebu, approximately 29 kilometers from Cebu City.
My day began early, at 5:30 AM, as I boarded a bus to our meeting point at the Alphine Ice Plant in San Fernando. We went on what was planned to be a 25-kilometer hike, but later opted for a more manageable 15.8-kilometer trail leading to Busay Falls and onward to Tonggo Hills. This route, though moderate in difficulty, proved to be ideal even for beginners, making it a good addition to hiking for a cause.
While the route had its share of road sections, which I personally don’t prefer because I really like routes that are more on the trail, the scenery along the way, particularly towards Tonggo Hills, was nothing short of breathtaking.
The trek to Busay Falls was also a highlight; the cold waters of the falls were a welcome respite from the day's sweltering heat.
Despite being small in size, the falls attracted local families, who enjoyed their Sunday together, complete with food and even a makeshift grill.
There were quite a number of locals enjoying their swims when we arrived.
It was heartening to see the community enjoying nature, though the presence of plastics and other garbage was a reminder of the need for responsible waste management. Our guide mentioned past cleanup efforts that had visibly improved the area and plans for future clean-up drives, which I am so eagerly looking forward to joining.
Preserving these natural resources requires collective responsibility from both locals and visitors alike. It's sad to see such beauty destroyed because of irresponsible waste management. I hope that activities that will raise awareness and action to protect these spaces will continue for future generations.
After our refreshing stop at Busay Falls, we head to Tonggo Hills. I found this area particularly charming, with its scenic viewing decks and rest stations, perfect for taking in the panoramic pictures. Tonggo Hills is also quite popular among motorists; there are quite a number of stores and local food spots located in the hills for visitors to enjoy meals overlooking the green mountains.
In total, our hike took about 8 hours, including breaks and time spent at the falls.
Despite the challenges posed by the extreme heat from the sun, every moment was rewarding. I am looking forward to returning with fellow hiking enthusiasts once the next season for our hike for a cause is scheduled.
It was my first time to hike in San Fernando, Cebu, and it did not disappoint. Exploring Tonggo Hills and Busay Falls was not just a physical journey but a reminder of the importance of preserving our natural resources. As we look forward to future adventures, I hope we take to heart the leave no trace pledge and be responsible adventurers.
